Types of Scaffolding Planks

A scaffolding plank is the board you actually stand on — the working surface of any access system. Steel hook-on planks: the heavy-duty workhorse

Steel is the strongest, longest-lived plank you can stand on. Our scaffold plank, SSP plank, 9.5″ steel plank and 320 mm steel plank are made from Q235/Q345 steel with a hot-dip galvanized finish to EN ISO 1461. A perforated, self-cleaning top sheds sand, mud and snow, while welded end hooks clip directly onto 42 mm or 48.3 mm ledgers — no couplers required, so a bay drops in with one hammer blow. For abrasive or coating environments we supply the sand blasting plank, built to shrug off grit and overspray. Widths run from 240 mm to 320 mm and the planks are rated to EN 12811 classes 1–6.

Aluminium planks: light and corrosion-free

Where the plank is moved often — access towers, renovation, event staging — aluminium wins on weight. Extruded from 6061-T6 alloy and anodized, our 12″ aluminium plank and 19″ aluminium plank are roughly a third of the weight of steel yet stiff across a 3–4 m span. The aluminium plywood deck adds a solid composite walking surface, and the 24″ aluminium wooden plank with ladder and 28″ aluminium access deck with ladder build the access ladder into the board itself, so workers step straight on without a separate ladder.

Infill and specialty planks

Not every gap takes a full-width hook-on plank. The infill plank is a narrower board that closes the end of a bay or fits around an obstacle where a standard plank will not seat. Laid across the ledgers or transoms, it removes the trip edge at the corner of a platform. Edge protection is finished with interlocking and American-type toe boards so the platform meets fall-protection rules.

How to choose the right plank

• Material. Pick steel for heavy-duty, long-service and industrial sites; aluminium for light-duty, mobile towers and frequent moves; a composite aluminium-plywood deck where you want a solid, non-slip surface.
• Width and load. Match the 240 mm / 320 mm widths and the EN 12811 class — light 25 psf, medium 50 psf, heavy 75 psf — to the duty of the platform.
• Hook compatibility. Confirm the end hooks suit 42 mm or 48.3 mm ledgers on your ringlock, cuplock or tube-and-coupler system.
• Standards. Specify EN 12811 (or OSHA / ANSI) and ask for a load-test report before you commit to a bulk purchase.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a steel and an aluminium scaffold plank? Steel is stronger and lasts 5–10 years in harsh, outdoor and industrial sites; aluminium is about a third of the weight and naturally corrosion-free, which makes it the better choice for access towers and work that moves often.

Do your planks fit ringlock and cuplock scaffolding? Yes. The welded end hooks clip onto the 48.3 mm ledgers used by ringlock, cuplock and tube-and-coupler systems, so one plank type spans all three.

What load class should I specify? EN 12811 classes run 1–6; most working platforms use class 3 (medium duty, 50 psf). Tell us the duty and we size the wall thickness and rib profile to match.

Can I get a plank with an access ladder? Yes — the 24″ aluminium wooden plank with ladder and the 28″ aluminium access deck with ladder build the ladder into the board, removing the need for a separate access ladder at the bay.

Are the planks galvanized? Steel planks are hot-dip galvanized to EN ISO 1461; aluminium planks are anodized for corrosion resistance.
